Coláiste Na Carraige, An Charraig with architect Anna Meehan

Transition year students from Coláiste Na Carraige recently took part in a collaborative design workshop with architect Anna Meehan as part of the IAFs Architects in Schools programme.

Students selected the theme of architecture and community. Investigating the town of Carrick, the students identified a vacant plot at the heart of the town as their site and proposed a multifunctional public space catering for everyone from tourists to local young people. Eager to bring their design to life, the students presented their ideas to local councillors and their ideas were well received. The conversation is still underway with the hope of implementing the students’ proposal.

For this project the students were highly motivated and took the project on as their own. Coming up with dynamic and realistic design ideas gave students a sense of empowerment and a real passion to bring their ideas to life.

Noel Ward, their teacher, said the project is ‘close to the student’s hearts and they brought real interest and intensity to it.’
