Sarah O’Dwyer came to introduce us to the ‘National Architects in Schools Initiative’ and the project we will be doing as a part of our TY curriculum.
She told us about the initiative and what we will be doing for this project: we will be designing a space/building for either the school or the wider community. We had a short discussion and there were already some suggestions such as a bus shelter in the school for rainy days and shelters for outside on rainy days. We will be working together to design one of these suggestions, or something else that someone could possibly suggest at our next meeting. We were assigned roles such as group leader, blogger (me), camera man and online group chat co-ordinator.
I personally am very excited to do this architecture project as I want to go down a similar route when I leave school. I would like to do architecture because I have a passion for graphic design and I really enjoyed doing technical graphics and woodwork in the junior cert.
Sarah spoke to us about the life of an architect and what she did to become one. Sarah said that architecture is like science and art mixed together. Sarah suggested that we could use programs such as google sketch up to help design our project.
A lot of the class is very enthusiastic about the project and can’t wait for the next visit, which will be in early January.
